Wicked is based on the popular story The Wonderful Wizard of OZ.  With characters like Galinda ( based on a younger version of Glinda the good witch) who is played by Ariana Grande, and Elphaba (based on the wicked witch of the west)  who is played by Cynthia Erivo as the two main characters. This story takes place in the land of OZ many  years before Dorthy arrives with toto. The original story of The Wonderful Wizard of OZ was written by L. Frank Baum. This book was later adapted into the movie the Wizard of OZ which was a massive success, it was released in 1939 making it as of 2025 at least 85 years old. It led to many cultural moments such as the popularization of color Film in the U.S. While not the first color movie ever it set the precedent for color movies going forward in Hollywood and popularized the technicolor method. screenrant.com
