The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a vibrant fast paced movie filled with nostalgia for old time viewers, fun, and excitement for new viewers as well. The movie is aimed at a family friendly experience but is entertaining for all ages. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film brings Nintendo’s iconic characters to life in a way that feels both modern and faithful to the beloved video game franchise.
The story follows the main character Mario and his brother Luigi, two Brooklyn plumbers that got sucked into a pipe transporting them to a wonderful mushroom filled universe. There he teams up with many notable names like Toad and Princess Peach to defeat the villainous Bowser and his son, who is bent on conquering the mushroom kingdom while also trying to secure the love of the princess. The plot and story line is relatively predictable the story still follows a fun and thrilling storyline. The movie works well inside of its run time and doesn't feel too repetitive. The movie mainly focuses on its animation, humor, and action.
One of the movie strengths is its beautiful and wonderful animations. The mushroom universe feels like it comes to life with the spectacular renderings. It is filled with dazzling detail and bursting color. The movie is filled with references and easter eggs long time fans will appreciate. From the beautiful rolling green hills to the lava filled lagoons this movie's animation is just spectacular. Truly amazing.
The humor in this movie will play a big role in its success. From funny childish jokes to complex confusing ones not every joke lands but the ones that do will sure make you giggle. The movie is set up with jokes and comedy for all ages. This approach is consistent with its goal of delivering a lighthearted, accessible adventure rather than a deeply complex story.
Ultimately The Super Mario Bros. Movie succeeds at its goal to bring light hearted comedy to the mushroom kingdom while offering a beautiful and scenic experience. It may not break any story telling records but its action, humor, and stunning graphics will have you on the edge of your seat. Overall the movie reaches the right audience and I would give it a 4.6/5.
