Student Council: What They Do

Student Council. These words have no doubt found their way into your ears by now, but what do they really mean? I talked to Ms. Bouveron, who is one of the two staff members responsible for running the Student Council, to find out what they do.

Student Council is our student leadership at Poudre. It is somewhat a class but it is more than that. ”The primary Mission and goal of Student Council is to build and foster a sense of school spirit,... and a sense of inclusion and belonging. Our goal is that everyone should feel like they have a place here.” Replied Ms. Bouveron. For those interested in joining the council, they usually send out application forms in the beginning of second semester, but of course people may have hesitations, so what is it like to actually be on the council; what do they do?

As the student leadership at our school they most obviously, run Prom and Homecoming for our Poudre community, but that is not all. They also run assemblies, as well as Feed our Families. “Feed our Families is our big philanthropy project” Ms. Bouveron said “it's a six week long project that we are working on, where we collect money and food donations, to go back to our own population of families who are most at need.” Some may be familiar with Feed our Families from the school year of 2024-2025, but to summarize, it runs from the months of November to early December culminating on distribution day. More details and changes are to come for this year but the motivation remains the same “ Poudre High school has one of the highest populations of students who are not food secure. which means they don't always know where their next meal is coming from. Honestly, that's the heart of the student council.” relied Ms. Bouveron of course it is not only for student council members “We could not physically do everything that needs to be done if it was only student council kids”

Homecoming has always been one of the most anticipated events of any high school year and this year Poudre has something new on the way. "This year for Homecoming we are changing it up a little bit. We are bringing in a new event for one of the spirit days, we are doing the homecoming car show" Ms. Bouveron commented. While this project is still in the planning phase this is what she had to say about the details “We are really excited about it. …It will be after school one day and it will be in the (Poudre High School) parking lot” But if you are interested you should follow Poudre events on Instagram as well as be on the lookout for information on the hallway monitors. But it's not only for us but hopefully the community as well “we are hoping to open up entries to not just Poudre students but also to community members. We want to  keep it balanced though… so we will have a couple of categories that will be for community members only, and some categories for Poudre Highschool students only. … As for what the exact categories are going to be and how to sign up for it the committee is working on it and will have that out shortly”

But of course we cannot forget the valentines day hearts “student council though it was really important that not just the kids who maybe are dating someone, but every single person in this building should have a valentine. Everyone here should see their name on the day of recognizing love” and it is no small feat either “ last year we had 14 students in the student council class and they had to hand-make fifteen hundred valentine hearts. Because they make one for every single student and every single staff member in the building. So each kid made just over 100 hearts. It takes a lot of time. And then they have to come in the morning of valentines day and put them all up around the building.”

If after that you are interested in Student Council you should know “It definitely does require a time commitment. I don't know if I could put an exact number on how much time it is. They (members of the student council) show up for training before school starts… (and) on back to school night Student Council kids were here to give tours to parents. So there are quite a few moments like that where it's not school hours and Student Council kids get called in to report for duty. The nice part about that is that they get to choose which events they want to work so they can choose what works with their schedule.” As far as school hours go specifically period 4a for the entirety of the school year is the period to take the class.

But when asked what makes a good leader Ms. Bouveron said“ The best leaders are the one who have follow through. They say they're going to do something then they actually do, it hands down.”
